Rail Fares to Rise From July as Indian Railways Introduces New Tariff

Patna: Train travel is set to become costlier from July 1, as Indian Railways rolls out a new fare structure affecting long-distance and air-conditioned services. While some categories remain untouched, the revised tariff is likely to pinch the pockets of many passengers.

Under the new rates, journeys in general second class up to 500km will remain unaffected. However, passengers travelling beyond this distance will be charged an additional half paisa per kilometre. For Mail and Express (non-AC) services, fares will increase by 1 paisa per kilometre.

Air-conditioned classes will bear the brunt of the hike, with fares rising by 2 paise per kilometre. In contrast, urban trains and Monthly Season Tickets (MSTs) will see no change, offering some relief to the large number of daily commuters who rely on them.

Meanwhile, Indian Railways is also working to improve the passenger booking experience. Traditionally, passengers are notified about the confirmation status of their tickets just four hours before departure. A new system, currently being piloted, aims to release the final reservation chart 24 hours in advance.

The trial began on June 6 in the Bikaner division of Rajasthan, involving one train. According to railway officials, early results have been positive, and the system may be expanded after a few weeks of testing.
