Rs 500 Fine for Not Separating Wet and Dry Waste: Mixed Waste Collection to Stop from October 2, Training for Workers Begins Tomorrow
Patna: Starting Wednesday, the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) will begin an extensive training program for its sanitation workers, drivers, helpers, supervisors, and mobilizers. The training, which will take place at AN College in Patna, is part of a broader initiative to enforce stricter waste segregation practices across the city. Under the new policy, households that fail to separate wet and dry waste will face a fine of ₹500.
The training sessions, set to commence at 6 p.m., will equip 1,500 officers and workers with the necessary skills and knowledge to implement the new waste management system. Each day, 40 teams of five people will undergo training, which will be conducted by the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA). A detailed booklet has been prepared for the training, outlining the route maps and schedules for the door-to-door garbage collection service.
Following the training, the newly trained workers and officials will embark on a city-wide awareness campaign, visiting homes in each ward with door-to-door garbage collection vehicles. Their mission will be to educate residents on the importance of segregating wet and dry waste. Starting October 2, PMC will strictly enforce the separation of waste, refusing to collect mixed garbage and imposing fines on non-compliant households.
This initiative is a crucial part of PMC’s efforts to improve Patna’s ranking in the national cleanliness survey. Currently, only 28 percent of households in the PMC area are separating their waste, despite garbage being collected from 98 percent of homes. The poor performance in waste segregation was identified as a significant factor in Patna’s disappointing results in the 2023 cleanliness survey.
