Patna: A gang of six armed robbers stormed the residence of a retired irrigation department accountant in Patna’s Rajivnagar area on Saturday, holding the elderly couple hostage and fleeing with cash and jewellery worth Rs 20 lakh.
The incident occurred around 2 am in Abhyudaya Nagar on Ghurdaud Road. The intruders, who broke in through a rear window by damaging the hall’s grill, held 75-year-old Ramavatar Singh and his 67-year-old wife, Kamala Kumari, at gunpoint while ransacking the home.
According to Kamala, the gang threatened to kill their son and daughter-in-law—who were asleep on the upper floor—if the couple raised an alarm. The robbers reportedly interrogated the family about a supposed land sale worth Rs 1 crore, allegedly tipped off by a neighbour. Despite Kamala’s denials, the gang searched the house and eventually found Rs 6.5 lakh in cash and jewellery estimated at Rs 14 lakh.
“All of them were wearing masks and spoke mostly in Hindi, though they used some words from other languages,” she said. “They looked to be in their early twenties, except for one who appeared older. They wore half-pants and vests.”
The criminals spent roughly 30 minutes inside before escaping through the main gate. Police and a dog squad have launched an investigation into the robbery. No arrests have been made so far.
