St. Xavier’s College of Management and Technology Hosts Annual “Sadbhavna Samaagam” on Art of Parenting
Patna: St. Xavier’s College of Management and Technology (SXCMT) in Patna played host to the annual “Sadbhavna Samaagam” program on Sunday, offering parents and young students valuable insights into the intricacies of parenting and the responsibilities associated with raising adolescents and young adults.
“Sadbhavna Samaagam” is a cherished tradition at SXCMT, where parents are invited for a get-together followed by a meeting with professors. This year’s theme centered on the ‘Art of Parenting for Adolescents & Young Adults.’
The event commenced with the rendition of the St. Xavier’s anthem, coupled with the ceremonial lighting of the inaugural lamp by dignitaries at the dais. A captivating welcome dance, performed by two students from Xavier’s Dance Club, set the tone for the evening.
Addressing the gathering, Fr (Dr) Martin Poras SJ highlighted the significance of spending quality time with children, setting the stage for the keynote address by Prakriti Prasad, a noted parenting and wellness mentor.
Prasad delved into various facets of parenting, declaring it the most important profession globally. “Parenting is the responsibility of raising a whole new generation,” she asserted, emphasizing the rapid development of children’s brains and the associated increase in stress levels.
Highlighting challenges in contemporary parenting, Prakriti pinpointed screen addiction, lack of discipline, diminishing interest in studies, and poor eating habits as common hurdles faced by parents. She shared insights from her book and extensive conversations with parents, teachers, and young children, emphasizing the paramount importance of effective communication in bridging generational gaps.
Prakriti proposed practical solutions, urging parents to create a tension-free atmosphere, protect their peace, and proactively address challenges. She cautioned against blunders such as idealizing one’s own childhood, adopting a patronizing attitude, making comparisons, and publicly admonishing children, stressing their severe psychological impact.
Offering practical advice, she urged parents to maintain a friendly yet boundary-setting relationship with their children. Apologizing and forgiving were highlighted as crucial aspects of effective parenting. Prakriti also suggested establishing family rituals, such as Sunday morning walks or shared leisure activities, to strengthen family bonds.
The enlightening talk was followed by a thought-provoking skit performed by the Xavier Theatre Group, exploring the theme of the Samaagam. An interactive question and answer session provided an opportunity for parents and students to seek advice directly from Prakriti.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Niharika Kumari, the Dean (Academics) and coordinator of the Department of Economics, expressing gratitude to all participants for contributing to the success of this year’s Sadbhavna Samaagam.
