UPI Meter Recharge Turns Risky: Customer Loses Rs 95,000 After Single Electricity Bill Payment

A man from Muzaffarpur lost Rs 95,000 after recharging his electricity meter online using a UPI app.

Muzaffarpur: A man in Muzaffarpur, lost Rs 95,000 after paying his electricity bill through a UPI app. The victim, Ramesh Kumar Nirala from Bhagwanpur Govindpuri, said that after recharging his prepaid electricity meter, money started getting deducted from his account automatically.

Ramesh said he had used the official recharge app on Feb 22. After that, the meter began recharging on its own. When he contacted the electricity department, he was told the issue was from the UPI app side. He then called the customer care number of the UPI app, hoping to solve the problem.

However, the situation got worse. The customer care person asked for his UPI details, and soon after, two large amounts — Rs 50,888 and Rs 44,444 — were taken from his bank accounts. Ramesh believes that the fraud was carried out by the customer care team itself. He also suspects there may be a connection between the electricity recharge app team and the scammers.

The cyber police have registered a case and are now investigating. Cyber DSP Himanshu Kumar said Inspector Arvind Kumar is handling the case and warned people to be careful while making digital payments. The police are using high-tech tools to track the fraudsters and are working to solve the case quickly.
