Vikramshila Bridge in Bhagalpur to Undergo Repairs as Ministry Approves Rs 22 Lakh Project

Bhagalpur / Patna : The Vikramshila Bridge, an essential link across the Ganges in Bhagalpur, is set to undergo long-awaited maintenance after the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways granted approval for the project. The bridge, which has been deteriorating in several places, will now see repairs to its damaged railing and roadway, ensuring safer travel for commuters.
A new four-lane bridge is already under construction parallel to the existing Vikramshila Bridge, but the condition of the older structure had become a growing concern. Following a shift in responsibility, the National Highways (NH) department has now taken permanent charge of the bridge’s upkeep. The green light from the ministry has paved the way for immediate restoration efforts.
Funding and Tender Process
The estimated cost of the maintenance project is Rs 22.36 lakh, with the NH department having already issued a tender for the work. The tender is scheduled to be opened on March 29, although there are indications that the date might be extended due to procedural delays in its publication by the Public Relations Department (PRD).
Scope of the Repairs
The maintenance work will include:
- Repairing the damaged railing
- Painting the railing to prevent corrosion
- Repaving the bridge’s roadway
- Installing new signage for road safety
Preparations Underway
Brijnandan Kumar, Executive Engineer of the National Highway Division in Bhagalpur, confirmed that preparations are in full swing. “The tender has been issued, and the maintenance work will be carried out soon,” he said.
