World Hypertension Day: Patna Doctor Warns of Undetected High BP Risks, Urges Early Checks

Patna: On the eve of World Hypertension Day, Dr Diwakar Tejaswi, a senior physician and Medical Director of the health initiative PAHAL (Public Awareness for Healthful Approach for Living), called for urgent public awareness around high blood pressure, describing it as a “silent killer” that often goes undetected until it causes serious harm.

At an awareness programme held at Dr Tejaswi’s clinic on Exhibition Road in Patna, he highlighted how high blood pressure, or hypertension, often shows no visible symptoms but can lead to life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, brain haemorrhage, and even blindness.

“Many people dismiss signs like headaches, fatigue or dizziness, but persistent high BP gradually damages vital organs,” said Dr Tejaswi.

He identified the major risk factors as chronic stress, poor diet high in salt and fat, obesity, lack of physical activity, smoking, alcohol use, family history, and ageing.

To prevent hypertension, Dr Tejaswi advised regular BP check-ups every six months after age 30, a balanced diet low in salt and fat, daily physical activity such as brisk walking, yoga or meditation, and avoiding tobacco and alcohol. He also emphasised the importance of medication adherence for those already diagnosed.

“Check your BP. Avoid danger. Your health is in your hands,” he concluded.
