Patna: In a significant stride toward modernising public healthcare in Bihar, the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) will operationalise 1,050 beds in its newly constructed high-rise building from May 3, hospital officials announced.
This expansion is part of the state government’s ambitious plan to redevelop PMCH into a 5,462-bed world-class medical facility, positioning it among the largest hospitals in the country. The new G+13 floor structure, equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, will begin accommodating patients in a phased manner immediately after its formal inauguration.
Hospital authorities confirmed that several existing wards will be gradually relocated to the new building. Departments including General Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, and Gynaecology are among the first to make the move. The transition aims to decongest older blocks and ensure a more efficient distribution of patients across departments.
Designed with better ventilation, upgraded equipment, and improved sanitation facilities, the new block also features modular operation theatres, high-tech diagnostic labs, and a rooftop helipad to facilitate emergency air ambulance services—particularly for patients coming from remote areas of Bihar.
Officials stressed that ongoing services would remain uninterrupted during the transition. “The shifting process has been meticulously planned to avoid disruption,” a senior administrator said. “This development is not just about infrastructure—it’s about reshaping the quality and accessibility of healthcare in the state capital.”
