20 Animals, Including Lions, to Arrive at Patna Zoo

Patna: The Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, popularly known as Patna zoo, is set to undergo a significant revamp, with plans underway to bring in approximately 20 animals of five different species, including lions, gaurs, chimpanzees, and Indian fox cats, within the next two to three months.
The zoo administration has accelerated its animal exchange program, holding multiple meetings with zoos in Mysore, Hyderabad, and Odisha. Notably, the Patna Zoo will exchange one rhinoceros for approximately eight animals of other species. Zoo officials are scheduled to visit another zoo in April to finalize the selection of animals.
The exchange aims to address several key issues within the Patna Zoo. Currently, the zoo houses only one aging male lion, over 14 years old and recovering from jaw cancer surgery. A lioness is also present, but the zoo seeks to acquire a healthy pair of lions to enhance its collection. Similarly, a pair of chimpanzees will be brought in to join the existing two. Veterinarians are preparing a comprehensive list of animals suitable for exchange.
In addition to the animal exchange, the zoo is undertaking a major upgrade of its enclosures. Iron mesh barriers will be replaced with glass panels in the lion, chimpanzee, gaur, kangaroo, and zebra enclosures, providing visitors with clearer and safer viewing experiences. The cages will also undergo repairs and receive a fresh look. In other areas, cemented walls or reinforced iron mesh will be installed to bolster the security and durability of the enclosures.
