Patna: In a bid to boost rural tourism and generate employment, the Bihar government is set to roll out the Pond Tourism Development Scheme, a unique initiative aimed at transforming large ponds across the state into tourism hubs. The scheme is expected to significantly benefit local economies and offer pond owners a chance to earn lakhs of rupees annually.
Under the scheme, ponds larger than 5 acres will be developed to attract tourists, with efforts focused on beautifying the surrounding areas and building basic infrastructure to support recreational activities.
“This initiative not only promotes tourism but also strengthens the rural economy and creates employment at the local level,” said an official from the Tourism and Minor Water Resources Department, which is spearheading the project.
604 Government Ponds Identified for Development
A list of 604 government-owned ponds exceeding 5 acres in size has already been compiled from various districts, including Patna, Gayaji, Nalanda, Bhagalpur, and Muzaffarpur. These ponds will be developed in phases, with an emphasis on eco-friendly and sustainable tourism.
Privately owned ponds meeting the 5-acre criterion can also be included in the scheme. Owners are encouraged to submit their pond details to the department for consideration.
Leasing and Management
According to the plan, government ponds will be leased for a period of five years, allowing individuals or groups to manage and maintain the sites. The lessees will be permitted to develop tourism-friendly facilities such as seating areas, walking paths, food stalls, boating activities, and more, turning the water bodies into attractive destinations.
“This scheme provides an excellent opportunity for entrepreneurs in rural areas to participate in the tourism sector and generate steady income,” the official added.
Boosting Water Tourism in Bihar
The Pond Tourism Development Scheme is the latest in a series of efforts by the Bihar government to promote water tourism. Previous projects have included development of tourism around Kudhni Dam, Banka, Rohtas, and Sasaram. The new scheme aims to replicate and expand this success by tapping into the underutilized potential of large ponds.
With monsoon arriving and ponds brimming with water, the government believes the timing is ideal to kickstart the project. Interested individuals, especially those with large private ponds, are advised to contact their local tourism or water resources department for more information.
