Patna: The southwest monsoon has officially entered Bihar, bringing widespread rainfall and a welcome dip in temperatures across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rain alerts for all 38 districts on Saturday, as the impact of monsoon activity becomes increasingly visible.
According to the IMD, an orange alert has been declared for 15 districts where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected, while a yellow alert is in place for the remaining 23 districts, indicating moderate rainfall and thunderstorms.
“The activity of the southwest monsoon has intensified in Bihar due to the influence of moist westerly winds,” said an official from the Meteorological Centre, Patna. “Widespread rainfall is likely to continue for the next three to four days, accompanied by strong winds blowing at speeds of 30-40 km/h and lightning in several areas.”
Temperature to Drop by 2–3 Degrees
The changing weather has brought much-needed relief to residents who were reeling under humid conditions until recently. The IMD forecasts that maximum temperatures will hover between 29°C and 31°C, while minimum temperatures are expected to stay between 23°C and 25°C over the next five days.
“The temperature in most districts may fall by 2–3 degrees Celsius, easing the discomfort caused by hot and muggy conditions,” the official added.
Strong Winds and Lightning Likely
While the rains have been welcomed by farmers and city dwellers alike, the IMD has warned citizens to remain cautious due to the possibility of gusty winds and lightning strikes. Authorities are urging people to avoid outdoor activities during intense weather spells and to follow local advisories.
With the monsoon now active, the state is expected to witness a shift in daily life, particularly in rural areas where agricultural activities are closely tied to rainfall patterns.
Relief from Humid Heat
The rainfall and cloud cover are likely to reduce heat stress and improve overall air quality. The shift in weather is also expected to ease the load on power supply networks that were under pressure due to high electricity demand for cooling appliances.
The Bihar Disaster Management Authority has been placed on alert to handle any weather-related emergencies, and district administrations have been asked to monitor vulnerable zones for waterlogging or damage caused by heavy rains.
