Patna: For the second time in a single day, tremors were felt in several parts of Bihar as an earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale struck the region on Tuesday evening. The quake, with its epicentre in Xizang (Tibet), occurred at 5:25pm, adding to the growing unease among residents.

This follows a more powerful earthquake earlier in the day, which struck at approximately 6:30am. Measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, the morning quake had its epicentre 10km beneath the surface in Xizang. It was felt across Delhi-NCR, Bihar, West Bengal, and other parts of northern India, causing widespread alarm but no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.

Bihar experiences prolonged tremors

In Bihar, cities including Patna, Vaishali, Samastipur, and Nalanda reported experiencing tremors during both earthquakes. While the morning quake woke residents with its intensity, the evening quake served as a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity.

In Patna, residents recounted their experiences of the morning quake, with some describing how the earth shook so strongly that it woke them from their sleep. The evening tremor, though milder, still prompted concern as people cautiously stepped out of their homes.

Cold wave compounds challenges

The earthquakes come as Bihar grapples with severe cold conditions. A cold wave alert has been issued for 20 districts, including Katihar and Purnia, with dense fog expected in parts of the state. Chhapra recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 7.7°C in the last 24 hours, while Gopalganj and Sitamarhi reported the highest maximum temperatures of 27.3°C and 27.01°C respectively.

Expert insights

Seismologists warn that the occurrence of two earthquakes in a day, though not necessarily indicative of a pattern, underscores the need for preparedness in the region. The proximity to tectonic activity in the Himalayan belt makes Bihar and nearby areas susceptible to seismic disturbances.

Meanwhile, meteorologists attribute the ongoing cold wave to westerly winds and snowfall in northern regions, adding to the challenges faced by residents. Despite the hardships, agricultural experts remain optimistic, stating that the cold weather is conducive to wheat crop yields.

As authorities continue to monitor the situation, residents are advised to stay alert for aftershocks and to follow safety protocols.
