Patna: Patna’s JP Ganga Path, a key infrastructure project running from Digha Golambar to AN Sinha Institute, is undergoing significant changes following a ruling by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banning permanent construction in the area. This has prompted authorities to adapt their plans, including the replacement of permanent structures with eco-friendly alternatives.
Patna Smart City officials have confirmed that permanent toilets originally planned for the project will be replaced with pink toilets or mobile facilities. Similarly, the proposed vending zone near Digha Golambar, initially designed with concrete and iron structures, will now feature approximately 500 pre-cast fabric shops. Tenders for these shops are set to be issued soon.
In addition, a two-kilometre stretch from LCT Ghat to Kurji Ghat has been designated as a no-vending zone, prohibiting any commercial activity. Plans for a walking track and stairs leading to the lower part of the path have also been scrapped, though other facilities, including seating and parking, remain on schedule for completion by April.
A Greener Ganga Path
The project, costing Rs 36.86 crore, includes the development of a seven-kilometre green belt with planter beds at over 150 locations beyond Digha Golambar. This stretch will feature benches for public use and enhanced landscaping with tree plantations. Parking facilities for up to 1,000 bikes and 500 cars are also planned near Digha Golambar and the Ganga Channel Bridge, creating accessible spaces for visitors.
Cancellations Under the NGT Directive
Plans for a 100-foot-high tricolour near the AN Sinha Institute roundabout have been shelved, despite preparatory work for the flagpole being completed. Additionally, an artificial pond and water fountains intended to beautify the area have been put on hold.
With these adjustments, the revamped Ganga Path aims to balance environmental concerns with urban development. Once completed, it promises to offer enhanced facilities, making it a vibrant recreational destination for the people of Patna.
