Patna’s IGIMS Set to Inaugurate Three New 500-Bed Hospital Blocks
Patna: The Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna is gearing up to inaugurate three newly constructed 500-bed hospital blocks, significantly enhancing its healthcare capacity. The inauguration, tentatively scheduled for January 15, is expected to be attended by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, though confirmation of his availability is awaited.
Once operational, these blocks will increase the institute’s total bed count to approximately 1,700, marking a substantial expansion of its medical infrastructure. The new hospital will house dedicated wards, outpatient departments (OPDs), operating theatres (OTs), critical care units, and a general emergency department for each medical specialty.
To streamline patient care, doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff will be stationed on the same floor as their respective departments. Round-the-clock medical services will be ensured, with doctors on continuous duty. Patient samples for pathological testing will be collected directly from beds, and facilities for advanced radiological examinations, including CT scans and MRIs, will also be available.
Deputy Director of IGIMS, Dr. Vibhuti Prasanna Sinha, confirmed that construction work on three of the five blocks is nearly complete, with most preparations finalized for the initial phase. While the inauguration is likely to take place soon, Dr. Sinha noted that additional time would be required to make the facility fully operational.
The expansion is part of IGIMS’s ongoing efforts to provide comprehensive healthcare services and meet the growing demand in the region. The remaining two blocks of the new hospital are still under construction, with completion timelines yet to be announced.
