Patna: Cold north-westerly winds sweeping across Bihar, driven by snowfall in the Himalayan mountain ranges, have plunged the state into a chilling spell, with freezing conditions persisting even under sunny skies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Patna has predicted that the cold wave will continue for the next 48 hours, with night temperatures expected to rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius from January 21.
Despite the slight rise in temperature, the state is unlikely to experience significant relief from the cold throughout January. The IMD has forecast dense fog in the Terai region on Monday, while other parts of the state can expect light to moderate fog.
Temperature Trends
On Sunday, minimum temperatures across most districts fell below 10°C. The state’s average maximum temperature was recorded at 23.8°C, while the minimum averaged 9.9°C.
IMD officials stated that light to moderate fog is likely to shroud the state, including the capital Patna, on Monday morning. However, districts near the Himalayan foothills will face dense fog during this period.
Over the next 48 hours, a gradual rise of 2 to 3°C in minimum temperatures is expected, bringing some relief during the night. Meanwhile, dry weather prevailed across the state on Sunday, though the cold remained biting.
Fog and Cold to Persist
The extended forecast indicates persistent cold conditions, with reduced visibility due to fog in many areas. Residents are advised to prepare for prolonged wintry conditions and take precautions during early morning and evening hours when the chill is at its peak.
