Patna: In LNJP Bone Hospital, located in Rajvanshi Nagar, Patna, a new technique will soon be introduced to fill small gaps between spinal bones using bone cement. The hospital administration is preparing to start this advanced treatment, which will be particularly beneficial for patients suffering from spinal TB, osteoporosis, and bone gaps. This facility is expected to be available in the new 400-bed building being constructed at the hospital and will likely start before August.
At present, bone cement is primarily used during surgeries involving implants, such as in cases of road accidents. Doctors use it to secure implants in place. Now, this technique is being expanded to fill gaps between all types of bones through minor surgery. Cement will be injected into the affected area, reducing the need for long-term medication. Currently, hospitals like IGIMS, PMCH, NMCH, and AIIMS Patna are already using this method for treating bone gaps.
LNJP Hospital Director Dr. Subhash Chandra stated that the technique will initially be introduced on a trial basis. If patients experience significant relief, it will be fully implemented. He explained that spinal surgeries carry the risk of damaging the spinal cord, which can lead to complications. To prevent this, the hospital is planning to acquire a neural monitor worth around Rs. 80 lakh. This equipment will help surgeons track the depth of drilling and avoid any harm to the spinal cord.
Explaining the process, Dr. Chandra said that the fractured section of the spine is first drilled, and then bone cement is injected using a syringe. This fills the void, stabilizing the bone and relieving pain. Previously, such fractures were treated only with medication, but now, a minor surgical procedure will provide faster and more effective results
