Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has welcomed the Union Budget, calling it “positive and progressive” and stating that it will accelerate the development of Bihar. In his response to the budget, Kumar highlighted key announcements benefiting the state, including a Makhana Board, Greenfield airports, and financial support for the Western Koshi Canal Project.
Boost for Makhana Farmers
The establishment of a Makhana Board in Bihar, a long-pending demand of the state, is expected to strengthen the production, processing, and marketing of the region’s famed ‘superfood.’ The board will provide organised support to farmers and enhance the value chain for Makhana, a key agricultural product of Mithilanchal.
Greenfield Airports to Enhance Connectivity
The Centre’s decision to facilitate Greenfield airports in Bihar will help meet the state’s growing aviation needs, CM Nitish noted. With the expansion of Patna airport and the proposed brownfield airport at Bihta, the addition of Greenfield airports will increase international flight operations and boost economic growth.
Infrastructure and Education Push
The chief minister also welcomed the Centre’s financial assistance for the Western Koshi Canal Project, which will benefit farmers cultivating over 50,000 hectares in Mithilanchal. Additionally, he lauded the provision for expanding IIT Patna, saying it would strengthen technical education in the state.
Another major announcement—the establishment of the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management—will promote skill development, entrepreneurship, and food processing activities across eastern India, providing employment opportunities for Bihar’s youth.
Relief for the Middle Class and MSMEs
CM Nitish praised the government’s move to increase the income tax exemption limit to Rs 12 lakh, calling it a significant relief for the middle class. He also welcomed the hike in the Kisan Credit Card loan limit from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, which he said would benefit farmers.
The decision to raise the credit guarantee cover for MSMEs from Rs 5 crore to Rs 10 crore was another highlight, as it would support micro-enterprises and create jobs. “Many steps have been taken in the interest of the poor, youth, and farmers in this budget, which is welcome,” CM Nitish said.
Expressing his gratitude, the chief minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for presenting what he described as a “better budget” that would drive Bihar’s development.
