Union Budget 2025: IIT Patna to Undergo Significant Expansion

Patna: In her Union Budget 2025 speech on Saturday, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced plans to expand the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna, including the enhancement of hostel and other infrastructure capacities.

Established in 2008 by an Act of the Indian Parliament, IIT Patna is one of the newer IITs, often referred to as the “second generation” of IITs.

Over the past decade and a half, the institute has made significant strides in academics, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, contributing to the employability of its graduates.

Expansion Plans

The announced expansion aims to accommodate a growing student body and enhance the institute’s academic and research capabilities. This initiative is part of a broader government effort to bolster infrastructure across five IITs established after 2014, with the goal of increasing the capacity to accommodate an additional 6,500 students.

The expansion of IIT Patna is expected to have a significant impact on the region, fostering technological innovation and providing advanced educational opportunities to students in Bihar and neighboring areas. This development aligns with the government’s commitment to enhancing technical education and infrastructure in the state.
