Patna: The Bihar government has approved the development of the historic Hariharnath Temple in Sonepur, taking inspiration from the renowned Kashi Vishwanath corridor in Varanasi. The decision was made during a key cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday, where 136 proposals across various departments were sanctioned.
A Sacred Site with Deep Mythological Roots
Hariharnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Hari) and Lord Shiva (Hara), is one of Bihar’s most revered pilgrimage sites. According to Hindu mythology, the temple holds significance in the legend of Gajendra Moksha from the Bhagavata Purana, where Lord Vishnu is said to have rescued an elephant devotee from the clutches of a crocodile at this very spot.
Every year, the temple witnesses a massive influx of devotees, particularly during the famous Sonepur Cattle Fair, Asia’s largest livestock fair, which has roots in ancient tradition and religious lore. The fair, held near the confluence of the Ganga and Gandak rivers, draws thousands of pilgrims who visit the temple for blessings before participating in the event.
Temple Corridor to Enhance Pilgrim Experience
To elevate the temple’s status as a major spiritual and cultural destination, the Bihar government has decided to construct a Hariharnath Temple Corridor, similar to the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor. The redevelopment project will be executed by the same Ahmedabad-based company that transformed the Kashi Vishwanath temple complex, ensuring world-class infrastructure and amenities for devotees.
The corridor is expected to include wider pathways, enhanced temple premises, better crowd management systems, and improved access to the river for religious rituals. This initiative aims to boost religious tourism in Bihar while preserving the temple’s heritage.
Wider Development Push for Religious Sites
The cabinet also approved major funds for the development of other prominent religious sites in Bihar. These include:
- Sindheshwar Sthan Temple (Madhepura) – Rs 90.27 crore for development
- Kusheshwar Sthan (Darbhanga) – Rs 44 crore for infrastructure upgrades
Apart from temple development, the cabinet sanctioned 82 projects worth Rs 20,000 crore under Nitish Kumar’s Pragati Yatra initiative. Key projects include road construction, water resources improvements, and the development of new bus stands in Darbhanga and Purnia.
