Patna: A new women-friendly market, ‘Didi Haat’, is set to open in Telhara village of Ekangarsarai, Nalanda, offering a range of nutritious food items, including meat, fish, milk, eggs, fresh fruits, and vegetables. The market will be entirely managed by JEEViKA didis, women self- help groups associated with Bihar Rural Livelihoods Promotion Society.
To support women entrepreneurs, a creche will be set up for the children of JEEViKA didis, allowing them to play and learn while their mothers manage their businesses. Toilets will also be built for both vendors and female shoppers, ensuring better hygiene and accessibility.
The market’s design is being developed by The University of Sheffield (LEAD) and The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, with a focus on creating a safe, hygienic, and climate-friendly space. Special attention will be given to maintaining the freshness of perishable items and minimizing food waste.
Didi Haat aims to improve nutrition access in remote villages while providing women with a secure marketplace to expand their businesses.
