Patna : The Rajgir Wildlife Sanctuary, renowned for its rich biodiversity, is home to a remarkable bird species, the Askal. Found exclusively in India, this unique bird is a major draw for visitors and bird enthusiasts alike. Locally referred to as the “Askal Murg,” the bird’s English name, “Spur L,” is derived from the distinctive spines on its legs.
Belonging to the pheasant family, the Askal is celebrated for its striking appearance. The male boasts a greenish-red head, brownish-red wings adorned with white spots, and a bluish-white abdomen. In contrast, the female, though less vibrant, is predominantly brown. Both sexes share the characteristic thorn-like spines on their legs, which serve as a key identifying feature.
The Askal bird’s habitat is equally fascinating. It thrives in low-lying, dry forests, often building its home in bamboo caves and dense underbrush. This species is endemic to India, with its distribution mainly confined to Central India and Rajasthan. The bird’s presence in the Rajgir Wildlife Sanctuary underscores the area’s importance as a conservation haven.
Local bird conservationist Rahul Rai, who has extensively studied avian species in the region, emphasises that the Askal is not found anywhere else in the world, making it a truly special part of India’s wildlife heritage. Its conservation is vital, and the bird is currently safe within the protected confines of the Rajgir Sanctuary.
