Magnitude 5.0 Earthquake Strikes Nepal, Tremors Felt in Parts of Bihar

Patna/Kathmandu: A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Nepal on Friday evening at 7:52 PM IST, with tremors felt in parts of north-west Bihar, including districts near the Indo-Nepal border.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at latitude 28.83°N and longitude 82.06°E, at a depth of 20 km. While no immediate reports of damage or casualties have emerged, residents in several border towns in Bihar reported mild to moderate shaking.
Recurring Seismic Activity in the Region
Nepal and northern Bihar lie in a seismically active zone, witnessing frequent tremors due to the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
In November 2023, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Nepal, killing at least 157 people and damaging infrastructure. Similarly, in October 2023, tremors from a 5.3-magnitude quake in Nepal were felt across Bihar.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks. The BhoomKamp app, recommended by NCS, provides real-time earthquake alerts and safety information.
