Bihar: Surge in Garlic Prices Amidst Winter Season

AURANGABAD – As the winter season takes hold, the garlic market experiences a notable surge, with prices soaring to 250 rupees per kilogram. This spike is believed to be influenced by a decline in the vegetable supply from five states.

The changing weather patterns are wreaking havoc on vegetable prices, causing damage to crops across the region. Green vegetables, in particular, have witnessed a significant price hike, with garlic leading the charge at 250 rupees per kilogram due to its decreased availability. Regular garlic is not far behind, currently fetching 200 rupees per kilogram. Market reports highlight a noticeable decrease in the overall garlic supply.

Factors such as rainfall and the ongoing wedding season have contributed to a 10 to 20 rupee per kilogram increase in the prices of green vegetables. The bulk of the vegetables are now sourced from external states, including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Karnataka. The cold weather has also impacted ginger prices, which have risen to 200 rupees per kilogram. Other vegetables such as tomatoes, brinjal, cucumber, and pumpkin are currently priced at around 30 rupees per kilogram. Green chili and coriander leaves have experienced a slight ease in prices, now standing at 60 rupees per kilogram. However, lemon prices have surged to 400 to 500 rupees, and radish is now priced at 10 to 15 rupees per kilogram. The persistently high prices of garlic and onions are reportedly affecting household budgets.

Fruits have not been spared from the price surge, with a general increase of 10 to 20 rupees per kilogram. Sellers report apples selling at 120-140 rupees, grapes at 140 rupees, and pomegranates at 160 rupees per kilogram. The rise in prices is attributed to a combination of rain and the ongoing wedding season. Buyers express concern over the escalating costs, citing challenges in maintaining control over the situation.
