Samastipur/ Patna : Sanjay Kumar, a resident of Sirsi village in Bihar’s Samastipur district, has made headlines for crafting a unique bamboo bicycle with only Rs 500 and a remarkable amount of ingenuity. The bicycle, which is drawing attention not only from Bihar but also neighbouring Uttar Pradesh and other parts of India, is a symbol of innovation amidst limited resources.
A Journey of Innovation
On January 24, 2024, Kumar began his ambitious project, inspired by a lack of employment opportunities and a desire to create something useful from locally available materials. Armed with only bamboo from local plantations and a modest budget, Kumar managed to assemble the bicycle in just 25 days. The frame, handlebars, and seat are all constructed from bamboo — a material often seen as a symbol of sustainability.
“I was driven by the idea of doing something different. When I couldn’t find work, I decided to try making a bicycle from bamboo. I gathered the material from nearby bamboo groves and worked tirelessly to complete it,” said Sanjay Kumar.
A Unique Design
One of the bicycle’s most striking features is its unconventional design. The rear wheel is larger than the front, creating a distinct and eye-catching aesthetic. Despite its unique structure, the bicycle is easy to ride, with many locals stopping to admire its craftsmanship as Kumar cycles through his village.
Kumar’s small home has become a gathering point for curious visitors who want to see the bamboo bicycle in person. “When people hear about it, they come from far and wide, from villages across Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, just to catch a glimpse,” said his younger brother, Rambabu Kumar. “We are very proud of Sanjay’s innovative spirit.”
Growing Popularity and Public Admiration
The bamboo bicycle has piqued the interest of a wide range of people. Ramvilas Mahto, a resident from the nearby Pahadpur village, was one of many who made the journey to see the bike firsthand. “In my entire life, I’ve never seen a bicycle like this. It’s truly fascinating,” Mahto said, staring in awe at the bamboo frame.
Sanjay’s creation has also caught the eye of community members who see potential in his work. Harem Ram Yadav, a local resident from Chochahi Bharpura, commended Kumar’s ingenuity. “It’s an incredible idea from a young man with limited resources. The government should support him to help refine the design and promote it on a larger scale,” Yadav remarked.
Plans for the Future
Encouraged by the response, Sanjay is now looking to further enhance his creation. “By August 15, I plan to give the bicycle a fresh look with modifications to improve its design. My goal is to make it even better and introduce it to the market so more people can benefit from it,” Kumar explained.
