Patna: Bihar’s road infrastructure is set for a major upgrade, with the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways approving a Rs 33,464 crore action plan for 2025–26 that includes over 50 highway development projects across the state.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Bihar Road Construction Minister Nitin Nabin detailed the outcomes of his May 7 meeting with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, where Bihar’s proposed annual action plan for national highway development was discussed and received central approval.
The action plan includes 52 key projects ranging from the construction and renovation of bridges to the widening of roads and development of bypasses. Among these are eight bridge-related projects, 18 railway overbridges (ROBs) and underpasses, and the upgradation of 526 km of existing highways—transforming two-lane stretches into four-lane roads or paved two-lane shoulders.
Bypasses have also been planned at seven strategic locations, including Dumaraon, Arwal, Daudnagar, Aurangabad, and Samastipur, as well as the realignment of the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) road on NH-727 and the construction of the Singhwesar bypass.
A separate component of the plan focuses on upgrading 227 km of roads to two-lane paved shoulders. The government has also prioritised 18 projects aimed at easing travel across railway crossings through the construction of overbridges and other structures to ensure uninterrupted traffic.
Minister Nabin expressed gratitude to Nitin Gadkari for what he called “consistent and positive support” to Bihar, adding that these projects would significantly enhance road safety, connectivity, and ease of travel for residents across the state.
