Patna: As Bihar reels under an intense heatwave, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has brought a sliver of relief for residents of five districts, forecasting rain accompanied by thunderstorms. However, even as some areas anticipate showers, other parts of the state remain under a severe heatwave alert, raising health concerns and impacting agricultural activity.
According to the IMD, scattered rainfall is likely in Patna, Bhojpur, Gaya, Bhagalpur, and Khagaria districts in the coming days. Thunderstorms and gusty winds are also expected to accompany the showers, offering a temporary break from the searing heat.
Meanwhile, a heatwave alert has been issued for Begusarai, Samastipur, Saran, Buxar, and Gopalganj, where temperatures continue to soar. Authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions, avoid outdoor exposure during peak hours, and stay hydrated.
Makhana Farmers in Katihar Face Crop Loss
While some districts await rain, the absence of monsoon showers has already begun to take a toll on agriculture in Katihar, particularly affecting Makhana cultivation—a significant crop in the region.
Farmers in the area report that the scorching sun and prolonged dry conditions have led to wilting of Makhana plants, stalling fruit development. “Last year, due to favorable conditions and government-supported irrigation through agricultural feeders, we had a good crop. This year, we expanded cultivation, expecting similar results,” said Suresh Yadav, a Makhana farmer from Katihar. “But the weather has betrayed us. The crop is drying before it can bear fruit.”
The sudden weather shift has left many cultivators disheartened. Local agricultural officers have noted that without immediate rain, Makhana yields could fall significantly this season, affecting both incomes and regional supply.
While the rain forecast brings a ray of hope for some, the uneven impact of the changing climate continues to challenge farmers and residents alike across Bihar.
