Darbhanga: Police have arrested a madrasa head Maulvi and two contract killers for the murder of an Urdu teacher, allegedly over a rejected marriage proposal involving the teacher’s daughter.

According to police, Mufti Anwar (40), head of a madrasa in Darbhanga, liked a 21-year-old woman teacher at the same madrasa and daughter of the deceased Mansoor Alam, who taught Urdu. Despite regular conversations, she reportedly had no interest in the Maulana and turned down his marriage proposal.

When her family fixed her marriage elsewhere, the Maulvi allegedly plotted revenge. He is accused of hiring two contract killers from Sitamarhi district to murder her father. The shooters had initially demanded ₹2 lakh, but the deal was finalized for ₹1 lakh.

Murder Executed Days After Marriage Was Fixed

On the morning of May 28, Mansoor Alam was cycling to Primary School Nisarganj, where he taught. Just 500 meters from the school, two bike-borne assailants shot him three times, fatally injuring him on Bharwada–Kamtaul Road near Nasirganj Tinarta.

The murder was captured on CCTV, which showed the assailants fleeing on a Pulsar bike.

Contract Killing Case Cracked, Accused Arrested

The case was cracked following the custodial interrogation of Mufti Anwar, who had earlier been taken into custody on June 1. During questioning, he complained of a heart attack and was admitted to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where he remains under treatment. Police confirmed that he is married with four children — two sons and two daughters.

Two shooters — Chhotu alias Divesh Kumar, resident of Starouli (Mahindwara PS, Sitamarhi), and Sadhu Ram alias Ankit Kumar, resident of Bathol (Bhokhara PS) — were arrested on June 2. Police recovered the Pulsar bike, six mobile phones, and the T-shirt worn during the crime.

Criminal Backgrounds Under Scrutiny

Chhotu was previously booked under charges including murder, Arms Act, and IT Act in 2003. Sadhu Ram also faces Arms Act and IT Act charges filed in February 2025. Authorities are now investigating their full criminal backgrounds.

An FIR was initially filed by the victim’s wife, Khairun Nisha, at the Singhwada police station against unknown persons.

SIT Formed to Probe Case

Following the gravity of the crime, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted on the instructions of Darbhanga SP (City) Ashok Kumar. The team was led by Jyoti Kumari, SDPO, Sadar-2, Kamtaul.

Speaking to the media, SSP Jagunath Reddy Jalareddy confirmed the details and added that further investigation is underway.
