Rail Mishap Narrowly Avoided in Bihar’s Jehanabad; Intercity Express Stops Just in Time

Bhabhua-Patna Intercity Express stops inches from disaster near Jehanabad.

Jehanabad: A potentially catastrophic train accident was narrowly avoided on Friday morning when a tractor laden with cement became stuck on the Patna-Gaya railway line near Kadauna Halt, a small stop located between Jehanabad and Nadoul stations in Bihar.

The incident unfolded when a tractor towing a trolley attempted to cross the railway tracks via an illegal crossing near Kadauna Halt. The trolley became lodged on the track, and the height of the tractor’s engine brought it dangerously close to the overhead electric wires, though no contact was made. The driver of the tractor managed to avoid injury.

As the Bhabhua-Patna Intercity Express approached the area, the train’s loco pilot spotted the obstruction and responded swiftly, deploying the emergency brakes. The train came to a halt just in time, preventing what could have been a major disaster involving hundreds of passengers.

Local Outrage Over Long-Standing Illegal Crossing

The near-miss sparked anger among local residents and passengers, many of whom have long complained about the unregulated railway crossing. Locals allege that the illegal passage near Kadauna Halt has existed for years without any action from the authorities, despite repeated warnings.

“This could have been avoided if the administration had acted on earlier complaints. How many lives need to be at risk before someone listens?” said one passenger, visibly shaken by the incident.

Railway Protection Force Begins Inquiry

Following the incident, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrived promptly at the scene to remove the tractor and trolley from the tracks. However, before they could apprehend the driver, he fled the scene with the tractor. Authorities have since identified the individual and launched a search operation. The RPF has confirmed an investigation is underway. Sources within the railway administration have indicated that plans are being drafted to shut down the illegal crossing and bolster security in the area to prevent such incidents in the future.

Disruption and Delay

Train services on the Patna-Gaya route were temporarily suspended for nearly an hour due to the obstruction. Several trains were halted mid-route, leading to significant delays and discomfort for passengers, especially amid soaring summer temperatures. Confusion and frustration were reported at Kadauna Halt and nearby stations as travellers awaited updates.
