Patna: In a bid to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the capital, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will inaugurate the Mithapur–Mahuli elevated road on Monday, offering a major infrastructural boost to southern Patna. Built under the larger Mithapur–Mahuli–Punpun corridor project, this new stretch promises to cut commute times significantly and reduce daily traffic snarls.
The elevated-cum-at-grade road, constructed from Bhupatipur to Punpun on NH-22, is part of a project worth Rs 1,400 crore. The inauguration will take place in the presence of Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, with Road Construction Minister Nitin Nabin presiding over the ceremony. Several political figures including Patna Sahib MP Ravi Shankar Prasad and Pataliputra MP Misa Bharti have also been invited.
Once open, the road will benefit lakhs of residents in the densely populated southern localities of Patna and improve road access to key districts such as Jehanabad, Arwal, Bihar Sharif, and Gaya. The first phase of the project, covering the Sipara to Mahuli segment, has now been completed.
According to officials, the travel time between Sipara and Mahuli—currently plagued by bottlenecks—will now be reduced to just 5–6 minutes via the new ramp near Bhupatipur. The larger project is being implemented in two phases. Phase 1, which is being inaugurated, includes an elevated road from Sipara to Mahuli. Phase 2 involves a 2.10-km elevated road between Mithapur and Sipara and a 2.20-km four-lane stretch between Mahuli and Punpun, both of which are still under construction.
The Road Construction Department has stated that work on the Mithapur–Sipara elevated segment is expected to be completed by November.
Officials believe that the new corridor will not only ease congestion on the New Bypass but also enhance overall urban mobility in the capital.
