Araria: A disturbing case of dowry-related abuse has emerged from Araria district in Bihar, where a man allegedly caused the disappearance of his wife and one-year-old daughter after his demand for Rs 2 lakh in dowry was not met. The woman’s father has filed a formal police complaint against seven individuals, including the son-in-law, at the Palasi police station.
The incident took place in Dehti village under the Palasi police station area. According to the complaint, Samshir Khan, a resident of Padariya Khan Tola in Sikti police station area, accused his son-in-law Maqsood Alam and six others of harassing and then abducting his daughter, Asmina Khatun, and her infant.
Samshir said his daughter had been facing persistent harassment since her marriage due to repeated demands for Rs 2 lakh from her husband and his family. Around a month ago, Asmina was reportedly beaten and thrown out of her in-laws’ home, only to be reconciled later through a mutual settlement. She had been staying with her parents since then.
On the morning of June 10, Alam visited his in-laws’ house claiming he was taking Asmina and their daughter to his sister’s home in Kolkata, where he said he planned to work and support the family. However, later that day, he allegedly called Asmina’s father and claimed that his daughter was missing.
Alarmed, the family rushed to Alam’s residence in Dehti village but were turned away after being allegedly misbehaved with by the accused. Khan then approached the police.
A case has been registered under relevant sections, and Palasi station house officer Mithilesh Kumar confirmed that investigations are underway to trace the missing woman and child.
