EPIC: Special Campaign in Bihar to Expedite Voter ID Distribution Ahead of Assembly Elections

Patna: With the Bihar Assembly elections on the horizon, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched a Special Summary Revision (SSR) campaign aimed at ensuring timely inclusion of new voters and speedy distribution of voter ID cards. As part of this drive, voters will receive their Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) within 15 days of their name being added or updated in the electoral rolls.
The initiative follows directives from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi. The focus is on enhancing transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the voter registration process.
Real-Time Tracking & SMS Updates for Voters
According to officials from the Bihar Election Department, the ECI has introduced a robust mechanism for real-time tracking of voter ID card issuance and delivery through the postal department. Voters will now receive SMS alerts at every stage of the process — from application to final delivery — significantly improving communication and reducing uncertainty.
New IT System Rolled Out on ECI Net Platform
A new, more responsive IT module has been launched on the ECI Net platform to support the campaign. The system integrates with the postal department’s API to ensure seamless coordination in dispatch and delivery of voter ID cards. Previously, even election officials had limited visibility into delivery timelines, causing delays and confusion among voters.
“This upgrade will streamline the process, reduce delays, and improve voter confidence ahead of the elections,” said an official from the Bihar Election Department.
Focus on Inclusion and Accuracy
The SSR campaign will also target first-time voters, those who have changed their residence, and individuals whose names were missing or misspelled in the previous lists. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will be mobilized to ensure door-to-door awareness and application collection.
The Election Commission has urged all eligible citizens in Bihar to take advantage of the ongoing drive and ensure their participation in the democratic process.
