Munger: An elderly man was beaten to death in Bihar’s Munger district after being mistaken for a thief while picking mangoes late on Thursday night, police said. Five individuals have been taken into custody for questioning, though no formal charges have been filed yet.

The incident occurred in Sati Sthan village, within the jurisdiction of Asarganj police station. According to officials, 58-year-old Madhuri Yadav, a resident of Sajua village, had gone to a mango orchard with four others to collect fruit at night. The orchard, police said, is overseen by Ramesh Singh, who had been entrusted with its care by owner Dhananjay Singh.

Spotting activity in the orchard, Ramesh Singh reportedly raised an alarm, suspecting a theft in progress. While Yadav’s companions fled, he was caught by Singh and several local residents who responded to the calls. Yadav was then allegedly assaulted by the group.

He was later found in a critical condition by his family and taken to a nearby Primary Health Centre, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Confirming the incident, Asarganj police station head Dharmendra Kumar Rai said: “We received information late at night. A team was sent to the location and five people have been taken into custody for questioning. The investigation is ongoing.”

The body has been sent to Munger for postmortem examination.
