Rohtas: Two people were killed and two others injured in a collision between a dumper truck and an autorickshaw on the Grand Trunk Road near the Veda canal in Bihar’s Rohtas district on Tuesday morning. The incident sparked public outrage, with locals blocking the highway and raising slogans against the local administration.
The crash took place in the jurisdiction of the Nagar police station, where a dumper travelling westbound reportedly collided head-on with an autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction. Eyewitnesses said the impact was severe, killing two passengers instantly, including the driver of the auto.
The deceased have been identified as Bhola Paswan, an autorickshaw driver from Mor Sarai village under the Shivsagar police station area, and Santosh Kumar, a resident of Nayakpur in the Chenari police station area who was currently residing in the premises of the forest department.
Two others sustained injuries in the incident and were taken to Sadar Hospital in Sasaram for treatment. Hospital officials said they are currently receiving care and remain under observation.
In the immediate aftermath, enraged local residents gathered at the crash site near the Veda canal and blocked traffic on the GT Road, demanding compensation for the victims’ families and action against the dumper driver, who fled the scene.
“Two people travelling in the auto died on the spot, while two others were seriously injured. Locals rushed them to the hospital. The road was blocked to press for compensation,” said Arun Kashi, a resident of Rohtas.
Sasaram sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Ashutosh Ranjan arrived at the site to oversee the situation and assured the public that action was being taken. “We have received information about the death of two individuals in a road accident. The road was briefly blocked, but traffic has since been restored after discussions with residents,” he said.
Ranjan added that compensation for the deceased is being processed in line with government provisions, and that the injured are receiving necessary treatment at the district hospital.
