Patna: In a significant move ahead of the upcoming state elections, the Bihar government has approved the Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Mandap Yojana, a scheme that will see marriage halls built in every panchayat to support the wedding ceremonies of girls from economically weaker families.
The decision was taken during a state cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Announcing the initiative in a post on social media, the Chief Minister said the project aims to ease the financial burden on rural families during weddings. “Marriage halls will be constructed in all panchayats to facilitate the marriage of daughters from poor families. These halls will be operated by Jeevika Didis,” Kumar wrote.

The cabinet has approved Rs 4,026.50 crore for the project, which will be implemented across Bihar’s panchayats. The scheme is expected to provide infrastructural support for low-income families and promote community participation, with the operation of the venues entrusted to self-help groups under the Jeevika programme.

In another key decision aimed at providing affordable meals, the cabinet reduced the price of food at Didi Ki Rasoi—community kitchens run by Jeevika Didis—from Rs 40 to Rs 20 per meal. The initiative is intended to make nutritious meals more accessible to low-income residents, particularly in rural areas.
