Patna: Solar energy took centre stage in Bihar on Saturday as the Bihar Industries Association hosted the second day of its three-day seminar and exhibition in Patna, featuring technical sessions that highlighted the economic and environmental benefits of solar power for homes and industries.
At the event, experts outlined details of the government’s PM Surya Ghar Yojana, launched in February 2024, which aims to provide free electricity to domestic users and save the government an estimated Rs 75,000 crore annually. Under the scheme, households can install solar systems of up to 10 kW capacity, though subsidies are limited to 3 kW. Homeowners can receive subsidies of Rs 30,000 for a 1 kW system, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW, and Rs 78,000 for 3 kW systems, potentially securing up to 300 units of free electricity each month.
A second session focused on the role of solar power in reducing industrial electricity costs. Speakers noted that while initial installation costs could appear steep, businesses typically recover these expenses within four to five years due to significant savings on electricity bills. Beyond financial benefits, solar power also reduces carbon emissions and helps businesses remain competitive by lowering operational costs.
Representatives from State Bank of India, SIDBI, and leading solar firms such as Novasys, Rayzon Solar, and Power One Micro System participated in the discussions, highlighting how banks and financial institutions are offering loans and subsidies to encourage the adoption of solar technology. The sessions were moderated by Keshav Kumar of Solar Hub and Sanjay Goenka, former vice-president of the Bihar Industries Association.
Organisers said the seminar was designed to raise awareness among both individuals and businesses about sustainable energy solutions and the support available through government schemes and financial institutions.
