Patna: The Bihar government has introduced a structured compensation scheme to support livestock owners facing losses during floods or other natural disasters. The initiative, overseen by the Department of Animal and Fisheries Resources, aims to offer financial relief and reduce the economic distress of those dependent on animal husbandry.
The scheme provides grants across four categories, depending on the type of animal or nature of loss. According to a government notification, compensation will be extended to families for a maximum of three categories out of the four defined.
In the first category, covering milk-producing animals such as cows and buffaloes, families can receive up to Rs 37,500 for the loss of up to three large animals. Smaller livestock such as goats, sheep, and pigs will be compensated at Rs 4,000 for up to 30 animals.
The second category relates to load-bearing animals. Owners may claim Rs 32,000 for up to three large animals like bulls, camels, and horses. In the same category, small animals such as calves, donkeys, mules, and ponies are eligible for a grant of Rs 20,000 for up to six animals.
Poultry losses fall under the third category, with a compensation of Rs 100 per unit and a cap of Rs 5,000 per family.
The fourth category addresses damage caused by fire in animal sheds attached to homes, with a fixed compensation of Rs 3,000 per shed.
To avail of the grant, livestock owners must submit an application accompanied by a certified report from a local veterinarian detailing the cause of death. Applicants must also include personal and banking details such as their name, address, Aadhaar number, mobile number, and account information.
