Sabour: Bihar Cooperative Minister Shravan Kumar visited Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour, to inspect the university’s pioneering research on Neera processing and value addition. He was accompanied by Sultanganj MLA Lalit Narayan Mandal.
During the visit, Shravan Kumar received a detailed briefing on the Neera Technology Project led by university scientist Ahmer Aftab. The minister observed the entire process of Neera collection, processing, packaging, technical grading, and the production of health-enhancing Neera products. Aftab showcased Neera-based items including sharbat, vinegar, and energy drinks, explaining that this initiative has been a dream project of the Chief Minister, with years of scientific research invested to ensure its success.
Vice Chancellor D R Singh said that linking a traditional product like Neera with modern technology under the university’s ‘Lab to Land’ policy is a unique achievement.
“The Neera processing technology developed under Dr Aftab’s leadership is establishing Neera as a healthy and safe drink while creating alternative and dignified livelihood opportunities for toddy producers,” D R Singh said.
He added that the research on processing, quality standardisation, and packaging technology is now in the final patent stage, and the university aims to implement this technology across Bihar through cooperative models to strengthen farmers’ and rural communities’ economic conditions.
Key highlights of the project include:
• 10 years of dedicated research
• Patent application in its final stage
• Products with high nutrition and low sugar content
• Focus on converting toddy producers into secure modern employment
• Preparations for national and global branding of Neera products
Shravan Kumar expressed his appreciation for the innovation, calling it a potential game changer for Bihar’s rural economy. He assured the university of all possible support for state-wide implementation under the cooperative framework.
