Bihar to Launch Helicopter Tourism Service to Boost Visitor Experience

Patna: Tourists in Bihar may soon be able to swap road and rail for the skies, as the state government plans to introduce helicopter services to key destinations in a bid to enhance travel convenience and promote tourism.

In a move aimed at easing travel for domestic and international visitors, the Bihar Tourism Department, in collaboration with the central government, is preparing to launch helicopter connectivity to popular tourist spots. A proposal for the initiative is expected to be presented to the state cabinet later this month.

If approved, the first phase of the service will connect the capital, Patna, with Gaya, Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, and the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) in Bettiah — all of which see high footfall from pilgrims and travellers alike. At present, it takes about six hours to reach VTR from Patna by road. The new aerial route could reduce that journey to just over an hour.

Initially, two helicopters — each with a capacity of five passengers — will be deployed, with plans to expand the service based on demand and performance. Tourism officials believe that quicker travel times could allow tourists to cover multiple destinations in a single day, enhancing the overall experience.

Helipads are set to be constructed close to major sites to minimise last-mile travel. Travel packages including the helicopter service will be offered through the tourism department.
