Patna: The monsoon has gained momentum once again in Bihar, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing alerts for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across the state. A total of 20 districts have been placed under thunderstorm alert for Wednesday, while five districts are under an orange alert for very heavy rain and 15 others under a yellow alert for moderate to heavy showers.
The weather department has warned of heavy to very heavy rain in the orange-alert districts within the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall is expected in Arwal, Gaya, Nalanda, Patna, and other yellow-alert districts, with the possibility of lightning and localized heavy showers.
Tragedy in Kaimur: Three Girls Drown in Pond
Amid the changing weather, a tragic incident occurred in Sakrauli village of Mohania block, Kaimur, where three young girls drowned while bathing in a pond on Tuesday afternoon. The victims—Usha Kumari (11), daughter of Jitan Ram, Mahima Kumari (10), daughter of Bhorik Ram, and Sunita Kumari (10), daughter of Surendra Pasi—had gone out with two other girls to graze goats. After being caught in a brief rain shower, they entered the pond to bathe. Unfortunately, they ventured into deep water and drowned. The other two girls ran back to alert the villagers, but help arrived too late.
Rains Disrupt Life Across Bihar
In the last 24 hours, heavy rainfall has been recorded in 12 districts, including Patna, where the skies remained overcast throughout the day and downpours occurred in the afternoon. Gusty winds accompanied the showers, further disrupting daily life.
In Supaul, a rally by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav was interrupted by sudden heavy rainfall. Attendees were seen using overturned plastic chairs as makeshift umbrellas to shield themselves from the downpour.
In Jamui, flash floods following rainfall caused a dangerous situation near Narganjo railway station on NH-333A, where an auto-rickshaw was swept away while attempting to cross the submerged road.
In Nawada, strong winds and heavy rain damaged the minaret and a wall of a local shrine, though no casualties were reported.
In the India-Nepal border area, around 300 residents gathered at Karbala Ground in Laxmipur (Raxaul in East Champaran) to offer Namaz-e-Isteqa—a special prayer for rain—amid rising concerns over scorching humidity and acute water shortages.
Reason Behind the Weather Shift
The IMD attributed the active monsoon phase to a cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand. The monsoon trough line is currently positioned close to southern Bihar, drawing in moisture-laden easterly winds that are fueling cloud formation and rainfall.
Forecast for Patna and Temperature Trends
According to the Patna Meteorological Centre, rainfall is expected to continue in the capital till Thursday. Despite the showers, no significant change in maximum or minimum temperatures is expected over the next few days, although a slight rise in maximum temperature may occur afterward.
