Patna: Professor T.N. Singh, the esteemed Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna, has been conferred the prestigious title of “Academic Legend” by the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF). This distinguished recognition acknowledges his groundbreaking and extensive contributions to Earth Sciences, particularly in the fields of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.
With a distinguished academic and research career spanning more than three decades, Prof. Singh is an internationally acclaimed expert in Earth Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Rock Mechanics from IIT (BHU) Varanasi, building upon his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Geology from Banaras Hindu University.
A Career of Scholarly Accomplishments and Leadership
Prof. Singh’s scholarly accomplishments have led him to pivotal leadership roles, including serving as the Geoscience Chair Professor at IIT Bombay. He has also held Vice-Chancellorships at two prominent universities: Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith and Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University. Beyond academia, his expertise is recognized in the corporate sector, where he serves as an Independent Director at Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL).
Since taking the helm at IIT Patna in 2021, Professor Singh has been a driving force behind transformative initiatives aimed at fostering innovation, strengthening industry engagement, and enhancing workforce readiness. His notable contributions include the establishment of cutting-edge incubation centers in Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) and Medical Electronics. He also pioneered a “learning and earning” program in collaboration with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and TeamLease EdTech, demonstrating his commitment to practical skill development.
Prolific Research and Global Impact
A prolific researcher and academic thought leader, Prof. Singh has authored an impressive body of work, including over 340 peer-reviewed publications. He has guided 36 Ph.D. scholars, shaping the next generation of researchers, and has written influential books in his specialized field. His innovative integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and soft computing tools—such as neural networks and fuzzy logic—into geotechnical modeling has garnered widespread recognition within the scientific community. His significant global impact is further reflected in his impressive h-index of 73 (Google Scholar) and 66 (Research.com).
Professor Singh’s exceptional career has been celebrated with numerous prestigious honors. These include the National Mineral Award (2006), the Young Scientist Award (1992), the UP Ratna (2019), and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Neem Foundation and ISRMTT. He has also received accolades for his teaching excellence during his tenure at IIT Bombay.
