Darbhanga: The development of Darbhanga Airport is moving ahead rapidly, with the new terminal building—being constructed at a cost of ₹912 crore—expected to be completed on schedule. The airport is being developed as per international standards and is poised to offer night landing services within the next two months.
During a site inspection on Sunday, Darbhanga MP Dr. Gopal Ji Thakur announced that all formalities for the commencement of night landing flights are being expedited. He was accompanied by Air Force Station Commandant Vikram Singh, Airport Director Nadeem Nazim, Project Manager Raja Reddy, Senior Manager Neeraj Prakash, and other officials and engineers.
“Darbhanga Airport ranks among the top airports in the country in terms of revenue. To match that performance with facilities, we’re prioritizing passenger convenience and infrastructure upgrades,” said Dr. Thakur. He added that the concerned agency has been directed to complete the necessary construction and install equipment for night operations.
The Air Force Commandant and senior officers assured that procedures related to the night landing system will be completed within two months, regardless of winter fog or adverse weather conditions.
The night landing facility is being developed under the CAT-II system. Tata Projects is overseeing the technical components, including the installation of the Eye Less System MUAR, instrument lighting, and other critical infrastructure. Dr. Thakur said that these upgrades will allow smooth operations even in low-visibility conditions.
In addition to aviation infrastructure, Dr. Thakur highlighted ongoing allied development projects. These include the construction of 50 residential units at a cost of ₹45 crore and a ₹25-crore hospital within the Air Force Station premises. A proposal is also in progress to upgrade the existing school from Class 5 to Class 12, to be submitted to the Ministry of Defence.
During his visit, the MP inspected the new terminal construction spread across 90 acres and reviewed progress in a meeting with project stakeholders. He also announced plans to propose an additional 100 acres to the Ministry of Civil Aviation for facilities such as a CISF campus, police station, school, bank, and hospital.
Further, instructions have been given to acquire 50 acres for establishing a new power station and residential complex near the airport.
“Our goal is to transform Darbhanga Airport into a fully equipped international airport with state-of-the-art facilities. These efforts will not only improve connectivity in north Bihar but also support the region’s economic growth,” Dr. Thakur concluded.
