Patna: Floods have returned to Bihar earlier than expected this year, with rivers overflowing and devastating vast areas. The Ganga and Kosi rivers are in spate across multiple districts, sweeping away roads, homes, and livelihoods.
In Jawainiya village of Shahpur block in Bhojpur district, entire families are fleeing as their houses collapse into the river. Once a prosperous settlement, Jawainiya is now marked by submerged homes and silence. Erosion has reached the heart of the village, cutting off the main road and making vehicle entry impossible. More than a dozen houses have already been lost to the Ganges, and over 100 families fear their homes cannot be saved.
Local MLA Rahul Tiwari has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Water Power Minister CR Patil, requesting urgent anti-erosion work to protect Jawainiya’s existence. He demanded pitching and boulders along the riverbank from Nauranga in Uttar Pradesh to Jawainiya village, stating that state government efforts so far have been insufficient.
Floodwaters have submerged vegetable crops in Diara areas of Patna, while erosion continues in Bhagalpur, Kahalgaon, Navgachiya, and Ajai Vinath Dham, destroying agricultural land and homes. The rising waters are forcing mass migration to higher ground as people struggle to save whatever remains of their lives and livelihoods.
