Sasaram: A panic-stricken morning unfolded in Sasaram district of Bihar on Sunday after a rabid dog attacked and injured around 50 people within the span of just one and a half hours. The incident took place across the villages of Atmiganj, Jamalpur, and Hariharganj in the Nasriganj block, creating a stampede-like situation as terrified residents scrambled for safety.
According to local accounts, the attacks began around 5am when villagers stepped out for morning walks. Witnesses reported that the dog appeared uncontrollably aggressive, biting anyone in sight—some on the throat, others on their arms or legs. Livestock were also attacked during the dog’s rampage.
The situation triggered widespread panic, forcing residents to flee the streets. Eventually, a group of young men from Hariharganj’s Ward 14 managed to corner and kill the dog.
Throughout the morning, crowds gathered at the local Primary Health Centre (PHC) seeking medical attention. Dr NK Arya, the PHC’s medical officer, confirmed that dozens of residents from the affected areas had received anti-rabies injections. The medical centre continued to treat victims into the afternoon.
Local public representatives and social workers, including Shyamul Haq, Twenty Point Programme Chairman Dr Amrendra Kumar, and ward councillor Shamshad Ahmed Parsavi, were present at the hospital to oversee relief efforts and coordinate support.
In response to the incident, Chief Councillor Shabnam Ara announced that the city administration would launch a campaign to capture stray dogs and hand them over to the forest department. “This is an urgent public safety issue, and immediate steps will be taken,” she said.
