Patna: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna conferred a record 1,320 degrees at its 12th convocation on Tuesday, in a ceremony that combined celebration with calls for graduates to lead India’s future.

Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the chief guest, congratulated the graduating class and urged them to think critically and act locally. “Youth must work hard for the nation’s prosperity. The concept of a developed India will be realised only with the core mantra of ‘local for vocal’,” he said, adding that India’s rural economy must remain a priority.

Union textile minister Giriraj Singh praised the institute for producing graduates ready to take on global challenges while solving problems at home. “From today, you are starting a new innings in the field of nation-building,” he told the students. “IITians have not only contributed to building the nation but also at the global level. It is expected from all of you to address local problems through technology.”

Nityanand Rai, minister of state for home affairs, struck a similar note of responsibility. “Today, as you step out of the academic walls of IIT Patna, you enter a world awaiting your leadership and innovation,” he said. “You have received an exceptional education, and with it comes the responsibility to use your talent for the upliftment of society. Don’t be mere spectators but active participants in the great national project aimed at making India prosperous, secure, and technologically empowered.”

The convocation also featured remarks from B R Shankaranand, who reminded the graduates that “true education cannot be considered complete unless it deeply incorporates our cultural values”.

Degrees were awarded across a range of programmes, including BTech, BS, MSc, MTech, PhD, and hybrid MBA and MTech courses. Of the total, 856 students came from regular courses, while 464 graduated from hybrid programmes.

Academic excellence was recognised with four gold medals and 28 silver medals. Among the top awardees were A S Poornash (President of India Gold Medal), Dheeraj Kumar (Chairman’s Gold Medal), Rishikant Chigrupaatii (Director’s Gold Medal) and Yash Kumar (Aryabhatta Gold Medal).

IIT Patna Hosts Largest Convocation as Union Ministers Urge Graduates to Shape India’s Future

Prof T N Singh, IIT Patna’s director, said the convocation marked both a milestone and a starting point. “Your time at IIT Patna was not just about earning a degree; it was a journey of character building, determination, and inquisitive thinking,” he told the graduates.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from registrar Prof A K Thakur, as family members, faculty and dignitaries joined the largest graduating batch in IIT Patna’s history in celebration.
