Patna: Members of the Bihar State Nurses’ Association clashed with police on Tuesday while protesting outside the Janata Dal (United) office in Patna, demanding the release of pending examination results and long-standing employment rights.
The nurses, who have been serving continuously since 2012, allege that the state government conducted a restoration examination in 2024 but released results for only a fraction of candidates, leaving the majority in uncertainty. “Our demands have been ignored for 13 years,” one protester said, describing their frustration at repeated government assurances that went unfulfilled.
The demonstration escalated when protesters blocked the road outside the JDU office. Police attempted to disperse the crowd, using mild force to push some demonstrators toward Gardanibagh. Several protesters were detained, and a young man was reportedly sprayed in the eyes after resisting police attempts to take him into custody.
Union representatives said they had hoped to meet Chief Minister Nitish Kumar directly to highlight their concerns, including permanent appointments and regular salaries for nurses. “We want to present our demands peacefully, but government inaction is leaving us no choice,” they said.
The nurses have vowed to continue their movement until their demands are met. The police said they intervened to maintain public order, describing the protest as having “turned unruly.”
