Muzaffarpur: A political row erupted in Muzaffarpur after Mahatma Gandhi’s statue was adorned with a BJP cap and a party flag bearing the lotus symbol during an NDA workers’ conference, prompting sharp protests from the RJD and Congress and calls for action against those responsible. Visuals from the venue showed the statue near a school gate in Meenapur with the BJP insignia, triggering outrage and allegations of insult to the Father of the Nation.
RJD MLA Munna Yadav reached the spot, removed the party paraphernalia, and performed a “purification” ritual with Ganga water before lodging a complaint against unknown persons at Meenapur police station, terming the act “shameful” and unacceptable. Opposition leaders staged demonstrations and raised slogans, while demanding identification and prosecution of those who put the party items on the statue during the conference that featured senior NDA leaders.
Police said they are examining footage and eyewitness accounts to determine responsibility, as the incident further inflamed the already charged poll atmosphere in the district. BJP and NDA organizers did not immediately clarify who placed the items on the statue, with inquiries ongoing amid rising political tempers.
