Patna: Bihar has witnessed remarkable growth in honey production over the past two decades, and today it ranks as the fourth largest honey producer in India. In 2023-24, the state produced 18,030 metric tons of honey, a significant increase from its minimal production before 2005. This growth has created new employment opportunities, improved livelihoods for thousands of people in rural areas, and contributed to the state’s agricultural development.
The increase in honey production is credited to Bihar’s favorable climate, diverse flora, and effective use of natural resources. Government initiatives have played a key role in promoting beekeeping, particularly in fields of mustard, litchi, drumstick, and blackberries. Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, and Samastipur, famous for their litchi orchards, produce litchi honey, which is highly valued for its unique taste. Mustard honey is produced in mustard-growing areas such as Nalanda and Patna, while sesame honey comes from Aurangabad and Rohtas. This variety has helped Bihar’s honey gain popularity across India.
To encourage beekeeping, the state and central governments provide substantial subsidies under schemes such as the Integrated Horticulture Development Mission. Farmers can receive 75 percent subsidy on bee boxes, beehives, and honey extraction equipment, while Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe farmers get up to 90 percent. Under the state’s pollination promotion programme, between 20,000 and 100,000 bee boxes are distributed annually. Training in honey production and management is also provided to farmers, ensuring that honey farming is both productive and sustainable.
Experts say that the combination of government support, skilled farmers, and abundant natural resources has positioned Bihar as a leader in India’s honey production. The state’s honey industry is expected to continue growing, offering high-quality products to markets across the country while supporting the rural economy and promoting beekeeping as a profitable and sustainable livelihood.
