Darbhanga: A 30-year-old woman was killed in Darbhanga in what her family allege was a brutal dowry-related attack by her husband and in-laws. The victim, Tulsi Thakur, originally from Nepal, was reportedly assaulted with an iron rod and a knife before dying en route to hospital.
Tulsi’s father, Pawan Thakur, told police and media that his daughter’s husband, Rajnish Thakur, a jeweller in Darbhanga, and his family had been demanding five lakh rupees as dowry. “My daughter was continuously tortured for not giving the dowry. She had told me about this many times,” he said. “Tulsi was killed in a very brutal manner. I want the media to show everyone the photos of her murder. The accused son-in-law should be given the death penalty.”
According to Pawan Thakur, the woman was taken to Ramshila Hospital in Sakri, Madhubani district, in critical condition, and later referred to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital. She died on the way. Tulsi was a mother of three, including a youngest son undergoing treatment for blood cancer.
Neighbours described Rajnish Thakur as having a volatile temperament and said Tulsi had previously returned to her parents’ home three years ago after enduring regular abuse. She had later gone back to her in-laws’ house, believing the situation had improved.
The Nehra police have registered a first information report (FIR) against Rajnish Thakur and other family members, who are currently absconding. Rajnish Thakur has been arrested. Nehra Police Station SHO Nilesh Kumar confirmed that Tulsi’s body had been sent for post-mortem and investigations are ongoing.
