Patna: A bank employee was shot dead in Vaishali district on Monday, in what residents described as another example of Bihar’s worsening law and order situation.
Rakesh Kumar, 35, a microfinance manager with Axis Bank, was gunned down near Kanchanapur village in the Bidupur police station area. Kumar, a resident of Sahebganj in Muzaffarpur district, had been working at the Kanchanapur branch since February.
According to police, he was returning to the branch on his motorcycle after sanctioning a loan when armed assailants lying in wait opened fire, killing him on the spot.
Sadar SDPO Subodh Kumar reached the scene with his team and sent the body to Hajipur Sadar Hospital for postmortem. A forensic science laboratory (FSL) team also examined the site, recovering a cartridge. “The incident is being investigated. The criminals will be arrested soon,” Subodh Kumar said.
Police have sealed district borders and launched vehicle checks to prevent the suspects from fleeing. The motive behind the murder remains unclear.
The killing sparked anger among locals, who criticised the state government over rising violent crime. “People are being murdered in broad daylight. The criminals have no fear of anyone,” said one resident.
