Nawada: A tense situation unfolded in Nawada district, Bihar, when a police team was attacked by a mob during a vehicle checking drive on Thursday night. The incident took place around 8 p.m. near Darshan Nala, located on the Bihar-Jharkhand border under Govindpur police station area. The attack left three police personnel injured, including a woman officer.
Police said they had set up a checking point to stop vehicles coming from Jharkhand as part of a drive to curb liquor smuggling and ensure peace in the run-up to the assembly elections. At the checkpoint, officers were stopping vehicles one by one and conducting searches.
The situation escalated when a biker came from Jharkhand at high speed and was stopped by the police for questioning. According to police, the man appeared to be drunk and started arguing. Soon, a crowd gathered around the spot, and the situation quickly turned violent.
Eyewitnesses reported that members of the crowd began attacking the police team with sticks and bricks. In the chaos, the biker was freed from police custody and taken away by the mob. Constable Sanjay Kumar, PSE Gulshan Kumar, and a woman constable were injured. They were rushed to the Govindpur Community Health Centre where they were given treatment.
Constable Sanjay Kumar, who had joined duty at Govindpur police station only a few hours earlier, said he was questioning the biker when the mob suddenly attacked. “People gathered and started hitting us. They freed the man and ran away. One bike was seized and brought to the police station,” he said.
Police reinforcements were sent to the scene shortly after the incident to bring the situation under control. Authorities have said they will identify those involved in the attack and take strict action.
